I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Dory is the coolest kid on the block.
Dory Fantasmagory, by Abby Hanlon, is a brilliant and hilarious beginning chapter book for young readers, ages 6-8.
Who will love this book: Readers of Barbara Park’s Junie B. Jones series.
Dory lives with her mom, dad, sister, and brother – and a slew of imaginary friends who coax Dory into many bouts of unintentional troublemaking (much to the reader’s delight!).
In the first book of this series (I believe there are three or four books out now), Dory “spends the summer playing with her imaginary friend, pretending to be a dog, battling monsters, and generally driving her family nuts.” – Puffin Books
The best part of this series is that every page is graced with captivating and humorous sketches which make it a less-intimidating chapter book to begin for a new reader.
Quite possibly, my favorite character in this book is Dory’s imaginary foe, Ms. Gobble Gracker. With long nails, pointy shoes, and a tight black bun on her head, this villain is not to be messed with – unless your name is Dory Fantasmagory.
